Age spots is not the most accurate name to refer to the dark spots that appear on the skin as you age. So, exactly what causes age spots?

Aging actually has very little to do with the brown spots that becomes visible on your skin as you grow older. If you want the real cause of the problem, turn your eyes upward and look at the sun. Remember all those days of lying in the sun? This is your reward.

Caring for your skin should start while you’re still young

The appearance of age spots are normally associated with people well past middle age, but certain skin types may even start showing them decades earlier.

Naturally they’re most common on the areas of the body that normally see a lot of sun, like the shoulders, face, arms and hands.

UV radiation, that invisible menace to the skin, is the main cause of the problem. As your skin gets more and more sun exposure, more than the normal dose if pigment is deposited in the skin. Eventually with the passing of time these areas will turn dark and we’ll refer to them as age spots.

At least there’s some good news – these spots are mostly harmless, but having your doctor take a look at them is never a bad idea. Skin cancer can start out looking like harmless dark blemishes.

Treatment

A variety of treatments are available for these spots. If they’re really an issue for you, there is something to be done about it.

Prevention is better than cure, so start protecting yourself from the sun right now, even if you already have age spots.

If you don’t have them yet, good. Keep slapping on a safe sunscreen. The general recommendation from dermatologists is for a sunscreen of SPF 15 for a basic level of protection.

Topical bleaching creams should be used with extreme caution, and harsher dermatological procedures like chemical peels should also only be used in extreme cases.

Often these procedures have to be repeated many times for good results, which can be expensive and you’ll still need to use a topical treatment afterwards. Don’t go for extreme treatments until you’ve at least tried a safe, natural and painless bleaching cream.

It’s not difficult to find a safe herbal age spot remover if you know where to look.
