Help on Dealing Puffy Eyes

After we’ve had a good cry, our eyes naturally become puffy, but the puffiness is only short-lived. What irritates many, however, is waking up with puffy eyes or having that puffiness all day long. There are lots of things that can cause puffy eyes but fluid retention is the most common cause. When you’re lying down for hours at a time, there is water buildup in the tissues underneath the eye skin area. And when we get up, gravity pulls the water down to accumulate on the eye lids. The puffiness around the eyes vanishes once the fluid is absorbed. Knowing the many reasons behind your puffy eyes in the morning is going to help you significantly in treating them for good.

Pregnancy, menstruation and other hormonal changes in the body can cause body fluid fluctuations, which can lead to the appearance of puffiness around the eyes. Actually, anything that makes you retain water, like intake of alcohol, caffeine and salty foods, can induce puffiness around the eyes. You may be having an allergic reaction if the puffy eyes are accompanied by redness and itching. When you’re fraught, haggard, or you lack sleep, you’re liable to get puffy eyes. Your eyes may become irritated and the skin surrounding the eyes may start to swell if you wear contact lenses for long periods. As with the other parts of your body, your eyes do need rest so it can rejuvenate itself.

Closing your eyes and placing two chilled cucumber slices or tea bags, regulating your sodium, alcohol and caffeine ingestion, and washing your face with cold water are just a few of the natural ways you can treat those puffy eyes. If the puffiness around the eyes is triggered by allergic reactions, know what allergen it is and then make a deliberate attempt to avoid exposure to it. Better yet, ask your doctor to prescribe you a good allergy medicine. Keep  yourself well-hydrated during the day, but try not to drink any more water right before bedtime. Raise your head with pillows when sleeping to prevent fluids from accumulating under your eyes, and of course, get enough sleep.

If you do not see any improvement, however, you may want to consult a health care provider because there are times when puffy eyes can be indicative of serious medical conditions like thyroid problems, kidney or liver disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure.
